How to Download and Convert Truist Bank Statements to CSV
Truist was formed in December 2020 through the merger of BB&T and SunTrust Bank, two large regional banks with combined roots going back over a century. If you were a BB&T or SunTrust customer before the merger, your account history and statements were migrated to the Truist platform when the systems consolidated in early 2022. Statements from before the migration may be available through Truist's portal, depending on how far back you need to go.
Truist's online portal does not currently offer a native CSV or Excel download of transaction activity. PDF is the primary download format, which means conversion is necessary to get your data into a spreadsheet or accounting tool.
Finding and downloading Truist statements
- Log in at truist.com and click on the account you need.
- In the account menu, look for Statements or "View Statements." This is typically under Account Services or in the left navigation panel.
- Select the statement period you want. Truist provides PDF statements going back up to 7 years for most account types.
- Click the download button to save the PDF.
If you are looking for statements from before the BB&T/SunTrust migration and they are not appearing in the Truist portal, contact Truist customer service. Pre-migration statements are sometimes available on request, though availability varies.
Converting Truist PDFs to CSV
Truist statement PDFs follow a consistent format with Date, Description, and Amount columns for deposit accounts. Upload your Truist PDF to Statement Pro to convert it to CSV automatically.
If you are using a generic PDF tool, Truist's statement layout is generally straightforward for tabular extraction, but watch out for two common issues:
- Wrapped descriptions: Long merchant names and transaction descriptions sometimes span two lines in the PDF, which can result in a single transaction appearing as two rows in a naive extraction.
- Multi-page statements: A busy month might produce a 4 or 5 page statement. Generic tools sometimes have trouble with table continuations across page breaks.
Understanding Truist's statement format
Truist checking and savings statements organize transactions chronologically by posting date. Each transaction row includes:
- Date (posting date)
- Description (merchant name, transfer description, or check number)
- Withdrawals (debit amounts, shown as positive numbers in a separate column)
- Deposits (credit amounts, shown as positive numbers in a separate column)
- Balance (running balance after each transaction)
When you convert to CSV, a good parser will combine the Withdrawals and Deposits columns into a single signed Amount column, with withdrawals as negative and deposits as positive. If you are doing the conversion manually, you will need to do this merge yourself.
Importing into Excel
After converting to CSV, use Data > From Text/CSV in Excel to import the file. In the import wizard, confirm that the Date column is recognized as a date type and that the Amount column is recognized as a number. Truist dates typically appear as MM/DD/YYYY.
Importing into QuickBooks Online
Go to Transactions > Bank Transactions > File Upload in QuickBooks and upload your converted CSV. Map the Date, Description, and Amount columns when prompted. If your conversion produced separate debit and credit columns, QuickBooks will let you map those separately, with debit amounts representing money out and credit amounts representing money in.
Working with pre-merger BB&T and SunTrust statements
If you have PDF statements from the BB&T or SunTrust era that you need to convert, those will have the older format from the respective bank rather than the current Truist layout. Both legacy formats are distinct from the current Truist format, so a parser that handles Truist's current statements may not produce clean output on BB&T or SunTrust PDFs. It is worth testing with a sample statement before processing a full batch.
