How to Import Bank Statements into Xero from PDF
Xero is great for bank reconciliation, but it can't read PDF files. If your bank doesn't support Xero's bank feeds, or you need to import older statements, you need to convert the PDF first.
Method 1: Convert to CSV, Then Import
Step 1: Convert your statement
- Upload your bank statement PDF at statementpro.app
- Statement Pro detects your bank and extracts transactions
- Download the CSV
Step 2: Import into Xero
- Go to Accounting > Bank Accounts
- Click on the bank account
- Click Import a Statement
- Upload the CSV
- Map columns: Date, Amount, Payee, Description
- Click Import
Xero accepts dates in DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD format. Statement Pro exports in a Xero-compatible format.
Method 2: Push Directly from Statement Pro (easier)
- Connect Xero: Go to Account > Integrations > Connect Xero
- Pick a bank account to send transactions to
- Upload your PDF and convert
- Click "Send to Xero"
Debits go in as SPEND transactions, credits as RECEIVE. They show up in your Xero bank feed ready for reconciliation.
Bank Feeds vs. PDF Import
- Use bank feeds when your bank supports them. It's the easiest option for day-to-day reconciliation.
- Use PDF import for historical statements, banks that don't support Xero feeds, or when working with a client's downloaded statements.
FAQ
Can Xero read PDF bank statements?
Xero has a limited PDF import feature for some formats, but it's unreliable across different banks. Converting to CSV works every time.
Will it create duplicates?
Xero flags potential duplicates if those transactions already exist. Check the preview before confirming your import.
